Pain & Symptoms
It hurts when I bite down — what could it be?
There are two types of pain you may be experiencing: a dull ache or a sharp, shooting pain. A dull ache is usually less problematic but may take longer to resolve. Teeth are surrounded by ligaments that attach to the jaw bone. When these ligaments become inflamed, we feel a dull ache. Inflammation may arise from biting down on something hard, such as ice or a piece of bone, or it may be from clenching or grinding your teeth. If you feel soreness in your jaw muscles, have headaches in your temple region, or sore neck or shoulder muscles, you may be clenching or grinding your teeth. A nightguard can be made to protect your teeth from fracturing and to relax your jaw muscles. If it feels like a lightning bolt just struck your tooth when you bite down, you may have cracked tooth syndrome. Once we have tested and diagnosed the tooth in question, a crown will likely be recommended. Please call our office at 952-934-3383 to schedule an appointment.
I have tooth pain or discomfort — what should I do?
Tooth pain is a common and sometimes unsettling experience. There is always an underlying cause, including but not limited to: decay, cracked tooth, trauma from eating a hard piece of food, temperature sensitivity, infection in the tooth, loss of tooth structure, grinding or clenching, periodontal disease, and gum tissue recession. The most important thing you can do is call our office at 952-934-3383 to schedule a visit. We will do everything possible to get you in the day you call. Tooth pain can get worse over time — the sooner it’s diagnosed and treated, the better you will feel!
What causes bad breath?
Bad breath (also called halitosis) is usually caused by bacteria in the mouth that produce unpleasant odors. Common triggers include poor oral hygiene, food particles stuck between teeth, dry mouth, smoking, and certain foods like garlic or onions. In some cases, bad breath can also be linked to gum disease, cavities, sinus infections, or underlying health conditions such as acid reflux or diabetes.
How can I get rid of bad breath?
Getting rid of bad breath starts with good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss daily, and don’t forget to gently clean your tongue where odor-causing bacteria often build up. Drinking plenty of water helps prevent dry mouth, and using mouthwash can provide temporary freshness. Regular dental checkups are key — if bad breath persists, a dentist can help identify and treat the underlying cause.
General Dental Health
Why should I go to the dentist regularly?
Your dental health is like taking care of a vehicle — regular maintenance keeps things running well for years, while skipping it leads to costly repairs down the road. Many dental issues don’t have symptoms until they’ve reached advanced stages. Regular cleanings and examinations can keep your teeth healthy and strong throughout your life.
Why does the dentist take x-rays?
Many diseases of teeth and surrounding soft tissue are hidden below the surface and can’t be seen without x-rays. These include infections in the bone, gum disease, abscesses and cysts, and some types of tumors. Finding these issues in early stages can save time, money, and unnecessary discomfort.
What is fluoride and why is it important?
Fluoride helps your tooth enamel become more resistant to acid from the plaque in your mouth. This plaque bacteria is a major contributor to tooth decay. Many city water systems include fluoride, so just by drinking tap water you’ll receive the mineral. It’s also found in apples, skim milk, lettuce, and brewed tea.
How long will teeth whitening results last?
The duration depends on a few factors. If you smoke, drink red wine or coffee, or eat acidic foods, your teeth will begin to yellow more quickly. Generally, teeth whitening can last up to a few years, and re-applications can be made to combat natural fading.
How can I get my kids to brush their teeth?
It’s imperative to teach children that brushing their teeth is important to their overall health — and the key is making it fun. Parents need to be enthusiastic about their own teeth because children emulate what their parents do.
I have dentures. Is it necessary for me to still see my dentist?
Absolutely. There is much more to dentistry than just checking teeth. Denture wearers have a different set of warning signs to watch out for. We recommend yearly checkups to check the fit of your dentures, check for mouth sores, screen for oral cancer, and perform a neck exam to make sure everything is comfortable.
